AnnaKickarse interview

FDOTR caught up with AnnaKickarse a day after playing the second installment of SFX at R bar (Wednesday, Dec 19) . Annakickarse has been the resident DJ for Vvynil and R Bar and to take the stage at the legendary Trash  party this Friday, Dec 21,  at Webster Hall is a big step into the right direction. Anna has also written for FDOTR in the past, she is always innovative and trying new things. We have seen her take her baby steps in the NYC nightlife and will continue to see her blossom, without further ado, this was our chat with a legend in the making.


FDOTR: Where did Annakickarse come from?
Anna: Well, back in the MySpace days when everyone would make nicknames as their display name such as “Misfit Mike” or “Nick Nitrogen” so I came up with Anna Kickarse.. it just stuck with me since I was in 7th or 8th grade.

FDOTR: How long have you been DJing?
Anna: Unofficially for a year. Officially for 3-4 months.

FDOTR:What got you to become a DJ?
Anna: When I would request a song, and it would never be played. I like hearing my favorite tunes as well as good songs no one knows about. I like playing rock n roll mashups with hard electro in the back, hence why I made the “Miss Spaceman Murder” mashup which is AFI vs. Hardwell. I also like playing new songs by people I actually know like Monikkr, Gosteffects, Kaster and Valerie Valentine. They deserve to be heard too!

FDOTR:You have a remix that you did of an AFI song, did you ever send it to them and if so, what was their reaction?
Anna: Yes! I have sent it! I have not received any reaction or response sadly...

FDOTR:You have been a go-go dancer, a DJ, and now promoter. Clear to see you interact with an audience, do you have groupies?
Anna: You can say I have people who are “obsessed” and “stalkers” but doesn’t everyone have someone like that?

FDOTR:How many venues have you performed at?
Anna: About 4 or 5.

FDOTR:Which is your favorite venue you have played at?
Anna: I gotta say it has to be The Woods or R-Bar so far.

FDOTR: How do you set yourself up mentally when you perform? Do you get nervous or are you alright when you go out there?
Anna: I just prepare my setlist of the definite songs I want to play. Mentally, I just get drunk while I’m DJing then I’m okay! I also tell myself I have no reason to be nervous. I’m only human.

FDOTR:Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
Anna: Since I’m always changing what I do, I have no idea what I’ll even be doing next month!
